about

BEHIND THE SONG: "There are any number of things in life that can do us in but what really terrorizes us are the demons we create in our own minds. They don't disappear until we breathe our last breath. This was originally a cha cha." ~ David Olney

lyrics

Scarecrow Man written by David Olney (Red Lilly Music, ASCAP)

The black clouds scowled
The cold wind howled
The lightning stabbed like a knife
The wild wolf cringed
And became unhinged
And he cried like a baby for his life
This was no night for a man or a beast
Confusion ruled on the land
What fool would venture forth in this hell?
Only the Scarecrow Man

With his eyes all ablaze
And his voice cracked and crazed
He was near swallowed up in the roar
Abandoned and lost
Tattered and tossed
He beat on the farmhouse door
"For the love of God let me in!" he cried
"I'll die if you don't lend a hand."
He pleaded and he begged and he bellowed like the wind
"Have mercy on the Scarecrow Man!"

The old widow heard
But she could not be stirred
To answer those pitiful cries
The storm grew in violence
She clung to her silence
She held to the safety inside
She'd heard the rumors, the stories, the tales
Of things she could not understand
That filled her with anger and filled her with fear
Of the cold blooded Scarecrow Man

The lightning did flash
The thunder did crash
The cattle were frozen in fear
Curses and groans
And unnatural moans
Echoed in the tornado air
The old widow sank and she breathed her last sigh
And she died on the farmhouse floor
The sun chased the clouds and the wind ceased to howl
And the air was as still as before

The old widow's dead
Her spirit has fled
To some far and mysterious land
But there by the door
Is a handful of straw
All that's left of the Scarecrow Man
There by the door
There's a handful of straw
All that's left of the Scarecrow Man
